Marangu Route – 6 Days Trek
MARANGU ROUTE SIX DAYS PROGRAMS
Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 6 Days itinerary begins and ends at Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort in Marangu.
Arrive no later than the day before starting the trek at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
Day 0: Arrive in Moshi/Kilimanjaro regionOur friendly driver will be waiting for you just outside the secured area of arrivals holding an Akweso Tours sign with your name on it. Don’t worry if the customs clearance is slow, our driver will wait. From there, it will be an approximate 45-minute drive to your hotel in Moshi (Bed and Breakfast plan). After you relax and get settled, we will go through an equipment check with you and you will have a briefing with your guide where all aspects of the trek will be explained and your questions answered. If you are lacking any equipment, all items needed can be rented locally of good quality and at a reasonable price. We will need to record your medical insurance contacts and policy number. The insurance should also cover emergency mountain evacuation. If your arrival is late in the day, the equipment check and briefing can be done early the next morning. Day 1:Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut
After having your breakfast at your hotel, we will make a short journey of about 1 hour (35 km) from your hotel to Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities at the gate. We start the trek through a fascinating tropical rainforest; we reach the first hut at Mandara for dinner and overnight. An alternative is to simply rest and relax the beautiful forest around the camp.
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut (2,700 m): 5-6 hours 8km walking.
Day 2:Mandera Hut – Horrombo HutToday the first part of the walk is a steep ascent through forest, but the path soon opens out into moorland and, in clear weather, there are great views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.
We arrive at Horombo Hut in mid-afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy the stunning scenery around the camp.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720 m): 4-6 hours 11km walking.
Day 3:Horrombo Hut (Acclimatization Day)Today we walk towards the Mawenzi Hut, passing the Zebra Rocks, this extra day and night at Horombo are for additional acclimatization. We recommend drinking enough water and walking slowly! All meals for the day are provided at the Horombo Hut. Overnight at Horombo Hut to further improve our acclimatization.
Day 4: Horrombo Hut – Kibo HutToday we climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. These 6-7 hours 9km walking will be taken at a slow pace until we reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), where we will spend the night in a comfortable hut.
There is no running water at Kibo Hut. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night from Kibo to sumit takes 6-7 hours 6km..
Horrombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700 m.); 4-6 hours 9km walking.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit to Horrombo HutWake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. We begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to rim of the main crater, Gillman’s 5,685 m. We will rest there for few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling good can continue slowly to make the three hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru peak 5,895 m. which is the highest point in Africa. After a few minutes to appreciate your accomplishment we descend to Kiko Hut is amazingly fast, and we stop at Kibo Hut for some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach Horrombo Hut.
Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo Hut (3,720 m): 13-15 hours walking.
Day 5: Horrombo Hut – Marangu GateToday we will descend past Mandara Hut to Marangu National Park Gate, successful climbers will receive their summit certificates. From here you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort for dinner and overnight.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to the hotel (6-7 hours 19km walking) .
Departure Day: Marangu to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)Our driver will be available at any time necessary to take you to Kilimanjaro Airport. Check-out time at the hotel is at 10 am, but if you have a later flight, we might be able to arrange a late check-out or if they have availability for you to have a day room (at extra charge).
